A couple in Peyton is trying to figure out how to move on after their home burned to the ground.
It happened around 12:30 a.m. Monday morning (3/24/14) in 19000 block of Scott Road. With the winds whipping as hard as they were, the couple says they can't believe they made it out of the home.
"He woke me up screaming, 'Fire!'" said Joan Templeton.
Templeton's husband Danny was trying to fight the flames as the wind was howling.
"It supplies a lot of oxygen to the fire which helps the fire grow and it kind of helped this one get out of hand," said Peyton Fire Department Lt. Mike Deckard.
Templeton said Danny was on the roof trying to fight it.
She said they just brought in new wood on Friday (3/21/14) for their wood burning stove in the living room and that is where her husband was sleeping when he heard something. He woke up and went to the porch next to the living room and that is where he found the fire.
"I knew it was gone. That smoke was unbelievable. Just overwhelmed you. You couldn't see," said Templeton.
Joan and Danny got out of the house with their two dogs, but they couldn't find their 14-year-old cat. What's left is a total loss.
"We didn't have much, but what we did have we worked hard for," she said.
"We absolutely feel for the couple. We wish there was more we could've done to save it," said Lt. Deckard.
However, with the wind, Lt. Deckard said it could have been much worse.
"We were just so lucky. So lucky," said Templeton.
The Red Cross is helping the Templetons. They're staying with Danny's mother until they can figure out where to go from here. The El Paso County Sheriff's Office is investigating the cause of the fire.
