Pueblo Police have arrested a man who they said shot another man and a pregnant woman, killing the man and the woman's baby.
Police said Damen Blake, 37, was arrested in the 400 block of W. Abriendo Ave. on the evening of July 18, 2014. Witnesses said Blake was arrested near a bungalow behind a vacant home. Police still were at the scene late Friday evening.
"He was arrested without incident," said Sgt. Eric Gonzales. "We're going to interview him at the police station and then we'll take him straight to jail."
Gilbert Thomas said he and several other men were visiting a friend at the bungalow when police suddenly arrived with guns drawn.
"I was kind of surprised about it," he said. I had no idea what was going on. They had us on the ground. They said something about a homicide and they were looking for someone. They ran our names and we cooperated with them as best as we could. I don't know where (Blake) came from. He was just there. They put the handcuffs on him and put him in the back of (a) vehicle."
Angel Castro watched some of the activity as a clerk from a next-door convenience store where he works.
"(Police) had men with helmets and M-16s with the (bulletproof) vests on. They went all out today. It's ridiculous. This town is getting worse."
Earlier on Friday, police SWAT officers searched a home on Amherst Avenue, not far from the scene of the bar shooting. No one was apprehended but police said the search was in connection with the search for Blake.
Also on Friday afternoon, police officially identified Blake as the suspect in the shooting. Police said his criminal history includes charges of assault, illegal drugs, driving with a suspended license and DUI, as well as being the subject of a protection order for domestic abuse.
In the early hours of May 26, police said Blake was shot several times while in the 200 block of W. Northern Avenue. Police learned of the shooting after Blake went to St. Mary-Corwin Hospital for his wounds. He was uncooperative in the investigation, police said.
The latest shooting happened at Sharky's Bar in the 1500 block of E. Evans Ave. around 12:15 a.m. on Thursday, July 17, 2014.
Nicole Vallejos, 28, and Quincey Coates, 23, were hit.
Coates was pronounced dead at the scene.
Vallejos, who was pregnant, was taken to a Colorado Springs hospital where her baby was delivered. The baby lived for a short time before passing away. There is no word on Vallejos' condition.
This is now considered a double homicide investigation.
Police say they believe Coates and Vallejos were in a relationship.
Blake is facing first-degree murder charges.
