The Waldo Canyon burn scar has many worried about potential flash flooding

MANITOU SPRINGS, Colo. -

Months of planning and preparing for flash flooding due to burned vegetation during the Waldo Canyon Fire could be put to the test Wednesday into Thursday.

Fountain Creek has been flowing in front of the Green Willow Motel in Manitou Springs as long as the family has owned it. But around 400 sand bags are lined up waiting.

"The fire didn't get us, I'll be darned if the water will," Terri Major said.

Majors' Grandparents bought the motel back in 1953. In all those years they never saw the water raise more than a few feet over its banks. But Major doesn't want to take any risks.

"Proactive instead of letting it just come and be waiting for it to happen then say hey, I wish we had some sand bags.

Emergency planners hope all residents have taken the warnings and the time to prepare seriously.
