Two people sustained minor injuries after their plane crash lands in an open field one mile west of the Pueblo Memorial Airport runway.

PUEBLO, Colo. -

According to airport officials a private plane carrying two passengers crashed in an open field a mile from theĀ  Pueblo Memorial Airport runway Sunday morning.

The passengers, a man and a woman from Oklahoma, walked away from the crash and were taken to the Parkview Hospital with minor injuries.

"The lady was more banged up and received more abrasions than the gentleman," airport operations specialist Guisseppe Pantaleo said. "He was up and pretty coherent. She was a little bit confused. It had just happened. It was quite a a shock, I'm sure very traumatic. They're very fortunate they're still with us and there weren't fatalities."

Shortly before 9 a.m. as the pilot was coming into land the engine stalled and would not restart.

Assistant Pueblo Fire Chief Bill Nemick talked with the pilot at the crash scene. Nemick believes the landing was intentional.

"He knew he wasn't going to be able to make the landing strip," Nemick recalled. "He was worried about a large ravine short of the runway. He didn't want to land in the ravine."

The Federal Aviation Administration and National Transportation Safety Board are now investigating the crash.
