SANTA MONICA, Calif. -

Three people were wounded in a shooting near Santa Monica College on Friday, The Los Angeles Times and CNN reported.

The extent of the injuries was not known, although a suspect was taken into custody, The Times reported. CNN reported that the suspect was "down."

Students were on lockdown at the school, where authorities were trying to get them out while still searching for a possible second gunman, Jose Claveria, a California Highway Patrol spokesman, told CNN.

Santa Monica police Sgt. Rudy Flores told The Associated Press that witnesses called to report a man on a street corner shooting at vehicles, including a bus.

President Barack Obama was several miles away Friday, appearing at a fundraiser, the AP reported.

According to the wire service, Santa Monica College is a two-year college with about 34,000 students.
