Royal Gorge Route Railroad back open for business
Royal Gorge Route Railroad is now open for the season after a tough summer with the Royal Gorge fire. The fire forced the train business to cut its route in half for a short time.
On Saturday, the sun was shining and 127 passengers hopped on the train for the first ride of the year.
"It's been awesome," said passenger Preston Juckem.
"Feels good that we can have a nice outing after such a big loss," said passenger Seth Jones.
The Royal Gorge fire shut down the park since last summer.
"We did run shortened trips for a short period of time," said Royal Gorge Route Railroad accounting manager Glenn Hayes. "It certainly didn't help. It's a big draw to the area and we all missed it."
It was a fresh start to the season on Saturday for opening day. Passengers said it was the perfect day to start 2014.
"We watched all of that on the news. We didn't know how we were coming to that exact spot, but it is cool to see that it is still up and running," said Madison Juckem.
"It feels good. It really does. You just can't really describe it. It's just nice," said Jones.
The two hour ride that was cut to one hour last summer will hopefully be chugging along all season long.
"It's amazing being able to come back out here, still see it and still be a part of it," said Juckem.
Train rides with guided tours start March 15. You can see the schedule here.
