Police have launched an investigation after a 12-year-old is approached by a strange man in the parking lot of her school. Joe Dominguez reports.

Security has been beefed up at Panorama Middle School, where a 12-year old outsmarted a man trying to get her into his car Tuesday.

The girl told police a man driving a newer, black Chevy sedan with California plates drove up next her while she was walking through the parking lot of her middle school.

The man told the girl to get into his car and that her mother told him to pick her up. The girl asked the man for her mother's name and then he drove off.

That man is described as white, in his late 20s or early 30s with short, dirty blond hair.

A spokeswoman for Harrison School District 2 said they're keeping a close eye on the parking lot. She said police are increasing their patrols and the school has added more people to their security detail.

A child safety expert applauds the girl's quick thinking.

"We are just so happy that this girl is safe and that she was very thoughtful about her response in a very tricky situation because sometimes people, when they try to lure kids, can be tricky," said Jan Isaacs Henry, executive director of Kidpower.

The school has at least three security cameras on their buildings. At this point, it's not clear if the man's car or the man were captured on those cameras.

KRDO Newschannel 13 asked police for copies of pictures captured through the cameras and were told that wasn't available Wednesday.

A letter explaining the situation at Panorama Middle School went home with students Wednesday.
