Teller County S.O. updates investigation into arson fires

At a news conference at 1:30 p.m. on Tuesday, December 17, 2013, the Teller County Sheriff's Office stressed that the suspect they are looking at in this case is only being looked at in connection to the arson fires that occurred in Teller County during the summer of 2012. Investigators also stressed that the Teller County Sheriff's Office is *not* investigating the Waldo Canyon Fire. A $10,000 reward is being offered for anyone who comes forward with information that leads to an arrest.
Original report:

The search for answers is over to find a suspect for the June 2012 fires in Teller County.  Teller County Sheriff's Office Detective Dennis Sherman believes he has his man.  He told me about the investigation and this latest new conclusion, "Right from the beginning we took a direction that we had someone who looked promising.  As the investigation continued, it started focusing on that suspect."

Detective Sherman says the suspect is an adult male.  The case has now gone to the District Attorney's office to review the information and decide how to proceed with the investigation.  No one has been arrested, named or charged yet.  Detective Sherman believes he and his partner have done an exhaustive job to get to this point.

Sherman has been in law enforcement for nearly four decades.  He reinforced that he is not an arson investigator but still believes after running down 160 leads with other law enforcement agencies that his office has a viable suspect.

Detective Sherman is proud that he and the staff of the Teller County Sheriff's Office have tangible results to this investigation.

I also asked if the Teller County small fires could be linked to the massive Waldo Canyon wildfire.  Detective Sherman told me that this suspect in the smaller fires has not been ruled out for the Waldo Canyon fire.

All the information that has been turned over to the District Attorney's office has also been forwarded to the El Paso, Douglas and Park County Sheriff's Offices.  We'll keep watching as the District Attorney's office looks over the evidence and decides what happens next in this case.
