The next flash flood

Several areas around the Waldo Canyon burn scar could be in the path of the next flash flood

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Chris Volberding is constantly on flood watch.  Her home in Mountain Shadows is right in the path of where flood waters would flow if and when they come out of the Waldo Canyon burn scar.

“It’s going to hit, I know it will,” Volberding said.

Hundreds of sand bags are in place to defend her home, but she doesn’t stop there.  Each morning Volberding volunteers to hike up in the Flying W ranch.  She has planted 800 pounds of winter wheat to try and prevent erosion.  She documents and reports movement of mud and ash to Colorado Springs officials so they might soften the blow.

“This is very real.  This is not a small event that’s happening up here.  If we had a 3 inch rain up here, we’re all in trouble,” Volberding said.

She says just 4/10 of an inch of rain fell at her house on Monday.

“If I see it go over ½ inch, I’m out.  I’m gone, I’m not going to stick around,” Volberding said.
