A Colorado State Trooper was hurt Thursday night (12/19/13) when a van slammed into the back of her parked patrol car.

Trooper Adeline Roybal was investigating a slide-off on I-70 in Adams County at around 11:45 p.m. when a 1996 Ford van slammed into her 2009 Ford Crown Victoria. The trooper was parked on the left shoulder and median in the westbound lanes.

Trooper Roybal was taken to a hospital in Aurora with injuries that are serious, but not life threatening.

The driver of the van, Ricardo Guzman, 40, of Denver, also suffered serious injuries. Guzman's passenger, an unidentified 46-year-old man suffered moderate injuries according to the State Patrol.

Investigators say the road was icy, and Guzman may have been driving too fast for the conditions. Charges are pending. Troopers say they do not suspect drugs or alcohol in the crash.

State Patrol says the crash that Trooper Guzman was investigating when she was hit was also the result of a driver who was driving too fast on the icy roadway.

Colorado law requires drivers to move over at least one lane and/or slow down when approaching a parked emergency or maintenance vehicle.
