Vigil set for teen shot and killed, mistaken for intruder by stepfather
A candlelight vigil has been planned for 14-year-old Kiana O'Neil Saturday night at Springs Ranch Park in Colorado Springs at 5:30 p.m.
The shooting happened on Monday, December 23, 2013 just before 6 a.m.
Kiana Rae O'Neil lived in Alamosa before moving to Colorado Springs. Friday night's vigil is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Our Lady of the Valley Catholic Church in La Jara, which is about 15 miles south of Alamosa.
Kiana attended Vista Ridge High School in District 49. Classmates gathered at her home on Ascendant Drive the day after she died to remember her.
A KRDO NewsChannel 13 crew reached out to family and friends at the home but they declined to comment.
Fort Carson identified the stepfather as 2nd Lt. Daniel Meade, a member of the 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division.
Friends remember O'Neil as cheerful and fun to be around. To see her memorial page on Facebook, visit https://www.facebook.com/pages/RIP-Kiana-Oneil/185939468280122
Colorado Springs police won't release further details about the shooting until their investigation is finished and the district attorney's office decides whether charges against the stepfather are warranted.
A District 49 spokeswoman said a decision about whether to provide grief counseling at the school will be made after students return from their holiday break on Jan. 6.
