The Wings of Blue Team scored big again in another major national competition for parachute proficiency. They won 33 medals at the National Collegiate Parachute Competition in Lake Wells, Florida. The competition was from December 27th to January 2.
This is the making the 34th time in the past 45 years the Academy has won the title.
Air Force Academy Senior Cadet Aaron Sporrer says the secret to success for his 25 member team is a mix of positives, "I would attribute a lot of our success to people before us, paying it forward and then we do the same for those behind us. After we learn all these things, it's extremely important to teach the younger team members everything we know."
Lt Col Sean McLay is the commander of the 98th Flying Training Squadron and the man in charge of the Wings of Blue team. He tells me that there have been a lot of hurdles to overcome this year to get to a year of greatness which include sequestration and government shut down which helped to cancel trips. However, through it all, Lt Col McLay says he is more than proud of his group of high flyers, "They're doing this in between learning how to be great officers and getting their degrees. They're balancing all of this to be national competitors and that's amazing."
Every year the Wings of Blue Team performs for a combined audience of 12 million people across the United States.
