Wintry weather returns on first weekend of spring

Published On: Mar 23 2014 12:29:25 AM CDT

Snow turned roads icy on Saturday, particulary along Interstate 25 between Colorado Springs and Monument.

Even on a weekend without rush-hour traffic, snow caused traffic headaches Saturday in the Colorado Springs area.

Drivers saw pattern that has been repeated during this winter's storms:  Snow that fell hard for about an hour, quickly turned roads slick with ice and caused crashes that slowed traffic.

For several drivers, it was too much to handle.

At least one person was injured -- possibly ejected -- in a 6:15 p.m. rollover accident on Voyager Parkway near the intersection of Old Ranch Road.  It slowed traffic in the southbound lanes.

The most unusual incident happened on southbound Interstate 25 between Fontanero and Uintah streets.  A truck pulling a horse trailer overturned, and three horses got out.  Police couldn't confirm if the driver was hurt, but said the horses were fine.

Mostly, however, drivers experienced the usual assortment of fender-benders, spin-outs, slide-offs, skids and traffic jams.  Most of the pavement was just wet or slushy, but bridges and overpasses had more ice and snow accumulations.

Zac Woofter, a Colorado Springs construction worker, was driving back from a job in Denver when he had to stop north of Monument to change a flat tire.

"I didn't even know it was supposed to snow," he said.  "Guess I should watch the weather."
Authorities remind drivers to be careful in winter weather conditions.  It's spring on the calendar but winter weather isn't over yet.

The biggest weather impact was along Interstate 25 between north Colorado Springs and Monument.  But driving conditions improved after the snow stopped and plows went to work.

Colorado Springs street crews were applying sand on slick streets as needed.  El Paso County had one crew working in the Monument area but planned to call out more crews Sunday morning as people drive to church.
