Police said a 50-year-old woman escaped unharmed from a man who apparently tried to abduct her near her Colorado Springs apartment on Tuesday.
The man's identity and motive remained unclear as of Wednesday night. Police have no description of the man's vehicle and only a vague description of him. The name of the victim hasn't been released.
The incident happened just after 7:30 p.m. in an alley behind an apartment complex on Sage Street, south of the intersection of Interstate 25 and Fillmore Street.
Police said the woman was parking in a designated space next to the alley and got out of her car when a man approached her from another car and began pulling on her hair.
The woman broke free, police said, by kicking the man, possibly in one of his knees. She then ran a short distance to her apartment and called for help.
Police haven't revealed whether the man knows his victim or is a stranger to her. The victim declined to speak with a KRDO NewsChannel 13 crew about her experience.
Female neighbors say being kidnapped in the dark of night and grabbed from behind is something they worry about.
"I'm the same age as (the victim) and I was worried people thought it was me," said Deborah Banks. "My awareness is heightened."
Fellow neighbor Mary Greene worries about her safety walking home from work, and that of her teen daughter.
"I'm going to have to talk with my husband about changing a few things so that my daughter doesn't walk home alone," she said. "We've considered moving but we don't know that the next neighborhood wouldn't be the same."
Because police have so few leads in the case, they welcome the public's help. Call the Colorado Springs Police Department at (719) 444-7000 if you saw, heard or know any information that could be of help.
