Worst Flu Season in Years in Colorado

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. -

Colorado is in one of the worst flu seasons since 2009 and El Paso County hospitalizations are double, compared to last year

450 people state wide have been hospitalized so far this season. That's more than 50 cases higher than this time last year.

84 of them were in El Paso County. Pueblo is seeing a significant increase as well, where 30 people have been hospitalized since November.

"At this point in the season last year, we would have probably been around 41, 42 cases. So really we are double this year of those particular hospital cases. We're seeing them in all age ranges… very small infants, all the way into the late 80's. So it's really affecting all population, ages and gender at this point," said El Paso County Health Director, Jill Law.

A large number of those hospitalized in Colorado are young adults.

People aged 25 to 64 make up 57% of all cases state wide. That's a huge increase compared to last year when they only accounted for 30%.

El Paso County and Pueblo also reflect those numbers, with the majority in the 25 to 64 age range.

Health officials say, there's still plenty of vaccine available.
