Detroit Red Wings captain and leading scorer Henrik Zetterberg had back surgery and will be re-evaluated in eight weeks, the team announced on Friday.

That means the 33-year-old left wing will not return until mid-April at the earliest.

This is a major blow for the Red Wings, are trying to earn a playoff berth for the 23rd straight season. Detroit currently has 64 points, which places them eighth in the Eastern Conference standings.

Zetterberg was playing for Team Sweden in the Olympics in Sochi, but was able to play just one game.

He was diagnosed with a herniated disc in his back and returned to Detroit for further evaluation.

He leads the Red Wings with 48 points, 12 more than the team's second-leading scorer (Niklas Kronwall), even though Zetterberg has played just 45 games.

Zetterberg has 16 goals and 32 assists.
