Los Angeles Dodgers right-hander Chad Billingsley has decided to have elbow surgery to repair a partial tear of his flexor tendon, a procedure that will prevent him from pitching this season, the Los Angeles Time reported Monday.

Billingsley had been hoping to pitch this season after recovering from Tommy John surgery. However, he was diagnosed with the flexor tendon tear last week after experiencing elbow soreness during his minor league rehab assignment.

Billingsley should be ready to throw again in three months, according to the Times report, but will not be ready to pitch in a game for six months.

If he has no setbacks, he should be ready for the start of the 2015 season.

Because of his health issues, the Dodgers may decline his $14 million option for next season and pay him a $3 million buyout.

Billingsley has not pitched in a major league game since April 15, 2013.
