The First Tee® of Pikes Peak is proud to announce that young people – ages 5-18 – in the Colorado Springs area will now have access to a highly successful youth development program that has impacted millions of young people across the county by using golf as a tool to teach positive values that are inherent in the game such as honesty, integrity, perseverance and confidence. Research has proven that The First Tee participants are learning and using life skills such as goal setting, interpersonal communication, self-management and resiliency skills.
In April, The First Tee® of Pikes Peak became the newest chapter within The First Tee network, comprised of almost 200 chapters internationally. Beginning this summer, under a long-term Use Agreement with the City of Colorado Springs, fun and empowering Golf and Life Skills instruction sessions will be offered at Valley Hi Golf Course – a one-week camp, June 3rd- 7th and a seven-week session, June 10th – August 2nd. Additionally, participants of The First Tee® of Pikes Peak will enjoy using the practice facility at Valley Hi Golf Course as well as playing rounds of golf at deeply discounted prices.
“We are very excited to partner with The First Tee to bring this life enhancing program to all the youth of Colorado Springs and their families.” said Steve Bach, Colorado Springs Mayor. “Golf and life skills learned through this proven education are critical for our next generation, and make a meaningful impact in this community. That’s why we are happy to be donating 20% of the net proceeds from the 2013 Mayor’s Cup charity tournament to The First Tee® of Pikes Peak.”
The First Tee has more than 700 coaches in the network. They include PGA and LPGA professionals and volunteers who donate their time because they believe strongly in The First Tee mission. The First Tee® of Pikes Peak has already certified coaches through The First Tee Coaches Program including PGA Professional Mike Northern, the Head Professional at Valley Hi Golf Course and LPGA Professional Katie Garcia, Program Director of The First Tee® of Pikes Peak. These coaches along with other local PGA and LPGA Professionals and volunteer assistant coaches including students from the PGA Golf Management Program at the University of Colorado Colorado Springs will provide a strong base of passionate coaches and mentors to invest in the lives of thousands of young people in the Pikes Peak Region. The mission of The First Tee captures the hearts of caring adults (coaches and mentors) that are passionate about youth development and the game of golf.
“The Nine Core Values which The First Tee has embraced into their program truly identify the essence of a successful person and what it takes to reach that position in today’s world.” Said Hale Irwin, World Golf Hall of Fame Golfer, University of Colorado All American athlete and Honorary Chairman of The First Tee® of Pikes Peak. He added, “I am so impressed with the kids that are in The First Tee program and how they are using golf to build a better life for themselves, their families and friends.”
